Uttar Pradesh and IIT Roorkee have launched a pioneering carbon credit model for farmers to boost rural incomes while promoting sustainable agriculture. The pilot programme, starting in the Saharanpur division, will help farmers earn carbon credits by adopting climate-friendly practices that increase carbon storage in soil and vegetation. These credits can be sold in carbon markets, with 50% of the revenue directly transferred to farmers’ bank accounts, offering them a new source of income alongside traditional farming earnings.

Under the initiative, farmers are encouraged to use agricultural waste instead of burning it, reduce tillage, and switch to biofertilizers to enhance soil carbon content. IIT Roorkee will oversee scientific monitoring, reporting and verification to ensure high-quality credits that meet global standards.
