EU Launches Green Claims Rules to Protect Consumers from Greenwashing

The European Commission unveiled the proposed “Directive on Green Claims,” a new set of rules requiring companies to substantiate and verify their environmental claims and labels, aimed at protecting consumers from greenwashing. The new rules are consequences of findings that more than half of green claims by companies in the EU were vague or misleading, and 40% were completely unsubstantiated. Read more

Microsoft Signs Deal for Direct Air Capture Carbon Removal

California-based climate tech company CarbonCapture announced an agreement with Microsoft for the purchase of carbon removal credits generated through its Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. DAC technology extracts CO2 directly from the atmosphere for use as a raw material or permanently removed when combined with storage. Read more

Allbirds launches ‘world’s first net zero carbon shoe’

Apparel and footwear retailer Allbirds, known for its sustainable efforts, has designed what it claims is the “world’s first net zero carbon shoe”, called M0.0NSHOT. The brand partnered up with Mango Materials, which set up a process that turns methane – a greenhouse gas released by sheep – into a polymer-like substance that behaves like a plastic, minus the carbon emission.
