India has launched its first-ever national R&D roadmap for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), marking a major milestone in its push toward a low-carbon future. The plan, unveiled by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) on December 2, 2025, aims to accelerate deployment of CCUS across hard-to-abate sectors such as cement, steel and power by fostering collaboration among government, industry and researchers.
Through this roadmap, the government intends to boost both innovation and investment in CCUS technologies, supported by the ₹1-lakh-crore RDI scheme. The initiative is designed not only to reduce industrial CO₂ emissions but also to position India as a global leader in climate-friendly industrialisation — aligned with the vision of a sustainable and developed “Viksit Bharat@2047”.
