Aerospace giant Boeing has signed a multi-year agreement with carbon removal platform Carbonfuture to purchase at least 40,000 tonnes of durable carbon dioxide removal credits. The credits will primarily come from a portfolio of four biochar carbon removal projects located across the Global South. The deal is considered one of the largest carbon removal procurements in the aviation sector.

Biochar is produced by heating organic materials such as wood or crop waste without oxygen, creating a charcoal-like substance that can store carbon in soil for centuries while improving soil fertility. Boeing plans to use the credits to address residual Scope 3 emissions linked to employee business travel as part of its broader climate strategy to tackle hard-to-abate emissions.
