The European Commission has adopted new rules under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation to ban the destruction of unsold clothing, footwear and accessories as part of its circular economy agenda. From 19 July 2026, large companies will be prohibited from destroying unsold garments, while medium-sized firms must comply by 2030. Companies will also be required to publicly disclose the volume of unsold inventory they discard, a move aimed at reducing waste and cutting an estimated 5.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions generated annually by such practices.
The framework introduces a standardised disclosure system from February 2027 to enhance transparency and encourage alternatives to disposal, including resale, remanufacturing and donations. Limited exemptions will apply in specific cases such as safety risks or irreparable damage, with national authorities responsible for enforcement as part of the EU’s broader push toward sustainable and resource-efficient business models.
