Microsoft has announced that it has reached its key sustainability goal of matching 100% of its annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy, a target set under its broader climate commitments first outlined in 2020. The company said this milestone reflects its decade-long investments in clean energy procurement, building one of the largest corporate renewable portfolios with contracts spanning 26 countries and totaling around 40 GW of capacity.

Officials highlighted that this achievement is an important step toward Microsoft’s broader aim to become carbon negative by 2030, as the renewable energy deals help drive demand for clean power infrastructure and reduce reported Scope 2 emissions. While Microsoft will continue buying enough clean energy to maintain this 100% match amid expanding cloud and AI operations, the effort underscores the tech giant’s role in advancing sustainability within the industry.
