Germany is planning a major expansion of its digital infrastructure, aiming to double domestic data centre capacity and increase artificial intelligence processing power fourfold by 2030. The initiative, led by Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger, reflects growing concerns that Europe is falling behind global technology leaders such as the United States and China.

The plan includes key policy reforms such as faster approval processes, allocation of dedicated land for new facilities, and tax incentives to attract investment. It also aims to ensure that municipalities directly benefit from hosting data centres, encouraging local support. Overall, the initiative seeks to strengthen digital sovereignty by reducing dependence on foreign infrastructure while enhancing domestic and European technological capabilities.
