Sweden has introduced a national action plan aimed at boosting the domestic supply of sustainable aviation and maritime fuels as Europe faces a potential fuel shortage from the 2030s. The government inquiry warned that existing EU production capacity may fail to meet future climate-driven fuel mandates, increasing reliance on imports and exposing industries to price volatility and geopolitical risks.
The proposed roadmap includes green credit guarantees, public risk-sharing mechanisms, and production support to accelerate investments in sustainable fuels. Sweden believes its access to fossil-free electricity, biomass resources, and biogenic CO₂ could position the country as a leading Nordic hub for clean fuel production while strengthening long-term energy security and industrial competitiveness.
