More than 600,000 hectares of land have burned across the European Union in the first eight months of 2026, more than double the 20-year average of approximately 280,000 hectares, according to the European Forest Fire Information System. Climate change and human activity are contributing to the increasing spread and intensity of wildfires.
UN agencies and researchers warn that traditionally cooler regions, including Scotland, the UK, and Scandinavia, are increasingly exposed to wildfire risks. To help countries prepare for these emerging public health threats, the WHO’s risk assessment methodology is being deployed to support strategic planning and strengthen preparedness.
