Gabon has signed a landmark agreement with German state-owned energy company SEFE to sell approximately six million tonnes of forest carbon credits, marking a significant step in the country’s green economy ambitions. Signed through the Gabonese Agency for the Development of the Green Economy (AGADEV), the deal makes Gabon the first African country to commercialise sovereign forest carbon credits eligible under the international CORSIA aviation emissions programme. The credits are certified under the ART-TREES standard, with initial deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2027.
The agreement aims to generate economic value from Gabon’s long-standing forest conservation efforts while contributing to global climate action. However, the financial value of the transaction has not been disclosed, and revenue distribution remains subject to a national regulatory framework that will include benefit-sharing arrangements for local communities. Gabon has clarified that the deal involves carbon credits, not the sale of its forests or land, which will remain under national ownership and management.
