Google is backing a major $350 million clean-energy project at a reclaimed coal mine in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Developed by MN8 Energy, Mammoth Solar will combine 86 MW of solar generation with 380 MWh of battery storage.
The project will use both lithium-ion and 10-hour zinc-based batteries to provide cleaner and more reliable power beyond daylight hours. Google is expected to purchase the project’s energy, capacity, and clean-energy attributes, while construction could create around 200 jobs and generate additional local tax revenue.
