India has introduced greenhouse gas emission-intensity targets for the iron and steel sector under its Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), marking a significant step towards industrial decarbonisation. The facility-specific approach recognises differences in technology, fuel use, and production methods across steel plants, enabling targets to be tailored to individual facilities.
The move aims to balance India’s growing steel demand with the need to reduce carbon emissions. With global measures such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) increasing pressure on exporters, robust monitoring, financial support, and stronger compliance will be crucial to making cleaner steel production commercially viable.
