The Union Agriculture Ministry has launched 11 pilot projects aimed at enabling farmers to generate carbon credits through sustainable and regenerative farming practices. The initiatives are being implemented by seven ICAR institutes and four state agricultural universities to develop scientific methods and strengthen institutional capacity for carbon credit generation.
The government has also issued the draft procedure under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme's (CCTS) Offset Mechanism to encourage participation from small and marginal farmers. The framework allows Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), NGOs, and project developers to aggregate farm-level activities, while two agriculture-related methodologies have already been approved to facilitate carbon credit generation.
