India’s small and medium-sized steelmakers account for around 40% of the country’s crude steel production, but their transition away from coal remains challenging. Tight profit margins, limited access to finance, and the high cost of cleaner technologies are slowing decarbonisation efforts across the sector.
Some producers in Chhattisgarh are turning to solar power, energy-efficient equipment, waste-heat recovery, and greater use of scrap to reduce costs and emissions. However, technologies such as green-hydrogen-based steelmaking and carbon capture remain too expensive for most smaller firms, highlighting the need for stronger government support and affordable financing to accelerate the transition.
