Union Bank of India secured a strong ESG score of 81.3 and a 1+ leadership rating from CareEdge-ESG, significantly above the industry median of 61.7, underscoring its solid governance and social performance as well as advancing climate risk management frameworks. The rating agency highlighted high consumer protection standards, workforce inclusion, grievance redressal efficiency, and comprehensive governance policies as key contributors to the bank’s elevated Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standing.

The assessment also noted notable progress in environmental initiatives, including embedding climate risk into its enterprise risk framework and expanding its green finance portfolio, though environmental metrics like energy intensity and emissions show room for improvement. While the absence of a standalone human rights policy and limited gender diversity in senior management moderated parts of the evaluation, the overall rating positions the lender among the ESG leaders in the Indian public sector banking space.
